OnePlus announced late last month that the Android 11-based OxygenOS 11 Open Beta for the OnePlus 6 and 6T will be available by the end of August. As a result, the stable update for these smartphones will arrive after Android 12 is officially released. However, power users of these smartphones will be able to use Android 11 right away.
Lineage OS 18.1 For OnePlus 6 & OnePlus 6T Users
LineageOS 18.1 based on Android 11 became official at the end of March. At launch, the latest edition of the famous custom ROM installed Android 11 on 76 smartphones.
Developers have now launched official nightly builds for the OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 6T, more than a month later. As a result, consumers who are interested in testing Android 11 on their smartphones will do so now rather than waiting until August for the OxygenOS 11 Open Beta.
Users would need to disable their phone’s bootloader in order to update LineageOS 18.1. Then they’ll have to swap out the stock OnePlus recovery for a personalized recovery like TWRP.
All they have to do now is go to the LineageOS official website and download the new available nightly build and install it via custom recovery. They would also need to install the GApps kit, such as OpenGApps, for Google apps and services.
Custom ROMs are not for all, unfortunately. As a result, if you have no previous experience with Android, you can wait for the OnePlus’ official Android 11 update later this year.
