‘Lucifer’ Season 6: Netflix Release Date & Everything We Know So Far – What’s on Netflix

Lucifer season 6 is set to be the final season of the beloved series which came to Netflix from Fox. With season 5B now available and the final season having wrapped up filming, here’s everything we know so far about Lucifer season 6. 

Before we dive into what we know so far about Lucifer season 6, let’s quickly recap with season 5. It was split into two halves with the first arriving in 2020 and the second part now scheduled for May 28th, 2021.

Now with all of season 5 streaming, let’s dig into what we know so far about season 6.

The road to Lucifer season 6 renewal

Originally, of course, season 6 of Lucifer was never going to happen.

Netflix’s revival of the series from season four onwards was meant to end after season 5. That’s partly why the show was split into two halves and given an extended season.

When Netflix gave season 5 the final season order, naturally fans weren’t happy that Netflix regave life to Lucifer but to only take it away two seasons later. It led to your usual campaigns such as petitions (with the best performing petition securing over 100K signatures).

With the numerous high-profile campaigns and the fact Lucifer continues to blow records out of the water, fans prevailed and once again got the show renewed.

Rumors for a sixth season began in early 2020 that Netflix had reversed its decision and began seeking to renew season 6 but only once it had got everyone signed on.

It was late February 2020 when Ildy Modrovich and Joe Henderson had signed on for a further sixth season.

In April 2020, after more talks, the second revival looked less likely as Tom Ellis’s contract negotiations fell through however they were fixed and Tom Ellis was signed back on in May 2020.

The first we heard of Netflix reversing course was back in February 2020 when TVLine had learned that Netflix was back in talks with Warner Brothers Television to extend the show.

On June 23rd, 2020 – we officially got word that season 6 was set to happen but that it would be the “final FINAL” season.

Has the story to season 5 changed now Lucifer has been renewed?

Joe Henderson addressed whether the ending to season 5b will change now that Netflix has given a sixth season. Speaking in an interview he said:

“It will remain exactly the same as we had planned and it was really very, very important to us. When the idea for season 6 came up, Ildy (Modrovich, the co-showrunner) and I said to Netflix, ‘if we do this and we find the right story, the thing we don’t want to do is to undo everything we have done ‘. Once you see Season 5B you will understand how A and B are actually one big season. How it all relates … The things that happen in the Season 5 premiere fit in completely with the ending.”

In an additional interview Chris Rafferty said that they wouldn’t have introduced God in season 5 had they known they were moving ahead with season 6 saying:

“I don’t think we would have brought God down to Earth. It’s pretty hard to top the Almighty. But I’m glad we did Season 5 the way we did it – it turned out more epic than a penultimate season has any right to be.”

Who’s involved with Lucifer season 6?

As we mentioned above, Ildy Modrovich and Joe Henderson who serve as the co-showrunners are both onboard to see Lucifer season 6 through.

It wasn’t until early July until DB Woodside confirmed he’d be returning a Tweet saying:

Happy to announce that I will be returning to Lucifer for season 6. Additionally, I will be directing an episode for our final season. ❤️This is a beautiful cast. We stand by each other. We fight for one another.

Tom Ellis was ecstatic about his returning replying: “Utterly delighted and excited to get back alongside you both in front of and behind the camera.”

In late September 2020, Scott Porter confirmed he’d be appearing in both season 5b and season 6. Scott is mainly known for his role in Friday Night Lights but has also featured in Speed Racer and will have a role in Netflix’s upcoming drama Ginny & Georgia.

In October 2020, we got word of two new guest stars that will feature in season 6. Those are Chris Coy and Rob Zabrecky.

Chris Coy is known for his appearances on The Duece, The Front Runner, and Detroit. He’s set to play the role of Alan.

Rob Zabrecky is known for his appearance in A Ghost Story, Lost River, and Criminal Minds. He’s set to play the role of Horace Goldfinger.

In December 2020 we learned of several new castings.

EW revealed that Merrin Dungey and Brianna Hildebrand will be starring in season 6. They notably “will have ties to the show’s angelic family.” Dungey who is known for Alias will play Sonya. Hildebrand who is known for Deadpool will play Rory.

On December 10th we exclusively revealed that Mandy June Turpin would be guest-starring in season 6 in the role of Dr. Jessica LaMotte.

Mandy June Turpin will play the role of Dr. Jessica LaMotte in Lucifer season 6 episode 6.

Lucifer season 6 episode count & episode titles

After an article from TVLine reported that Lucifer season 6 would consist of just eight episodes, it was later debunked by DB Woodside who confirmed that season 6 would consist of 10 episodes in total.

In a Tweet, DB Woodside confirmed the 10 episodes by saying:

“10! It will be 10 amazing episodes!”

As per season 6, the Lucifer Writers account has been slowly teasing the names of the new episodes. Here are the announced ones so far:

What to expect from Lucifer season 6

Now let’s take a look at what we can expect storywise from season 6. Of course, the episode titles just above give us some ideas but let’s quickly make some predictions as to what we see from Lucifer season 6.

Through a myriad of interviews, we already have a pretty good idea of what’s coming up in season 6.

We know there’s going to be a time jump between the end of season 5B to season 6 and that we won’t be focusing on a specific villain for season 6 instead aiming to focus on the core cast. Joe Henderson said “Season 6 is a much more intimate season, more character-focused.”

Lots of theories surrounding what will happen to Chloe given that she’s no longer a detective but that’s going to work in the favor of the cases covered in season 6 which are said to be “more personal than ever, allowing us to really focus on our main cast of characters as we approach the end”.

It’s also been said in a video interview that Chloe will find out about Lucifer’s past sacrifices.

Chris Rafferty has given us an insight via interviews as to what we can expect saying:

“There’s never been a transition of God’s power to a new God before. In the Season 5 finale, you see a lot of confusion amongst all the angels as to how exactly it all works – no one really knows. So our characters still have a few things to figure out, including getting to the truth of what it is they truly desire.”

Finally, Henderson has given us a broad overview as to what we can expect from season 6 saying:

“Bittersweet endings, tears and joy and a fitting goodbye to the characters we love so much.”

Where is season 6 of Lucifer in production?

Official production status: Filming concluded – now in post-production (VFX, localization etc) (Last updated: 04/06/2021)

Throughout summer 2020, Lucifer season 5b was put on hold due to the pandemic. We know the majority of episodes had been filmed but a few more had to be completed.

In August 2020, we learned that filming for season 5b was due to restart in October 2020 although it actually kickstarted on September 24th, 2020.

Tom Ellis stated in numerous interviews that production would simultaneously move from season 5 to 6.

In late September 2020, several cast and crew members posted to confirm that season 6 had officially started production.

Filming, however, began on October 6th, 2020 as confirmed by the co-showrunner Joe Henderson.

In late October 2020, we got confirmation that the writers had concluded their work on the sixth and final season with Ildy Modrovich taking to Twitter to confirm that it was the “last day in the Lucifer Writer’s Room”.

Filming was still ongoing as of December and January 2021 although Variety had revealed that Lucifer was among the many productions that had faced an extension from coming back from the holidays due to exploding COVID-19 rates in Los Angeles. It’s unclear whether the series has restarted filming in 2021.

In February 2021 the series continues to be in production with numerous cast members continuing to post from what Warner Brothers lot.

In early March 2021, Joe Henderson shared that they had just completed the penultimate table read and said it was emotional Tweeting:

“Today was the second to last Lucifer table read… ever… if we got that emotional today, I’m terrified of how much I’m going to cry at the last one…”

Tom Ellis responded saying “I had something in my eye. Honest.”

As for when we can expect season 6 of Lucifer streaming on Netflix? Our guess is as good as yours. With part 2 airing in early 2021, it’s not inconceivable that the series could return on Netflix for season 6 by the end of 2021. However, our safe bet right now is in early 2022.

On March 17th, 2021 Ildy confirmed that the team were gearing up to film the final episode meaning that we’re expecting filming to completely finish within the next few days.

Then, just a few short days later, we got confirmation (alongside the release date for season 5b) that filming had indeed concluded.

There are numerous posts from cast and crew worth reading but perhaps the best post to summarize how the cast and crew are all feeling is the Instagram post from Lesley-Ann Brandt saying:

“The Lucifer family has grown over the years & extends further than the WB lot. It includes our Vancouver crew from season 1 & 2. Reflecting on the many faces, be it LA or Vancouver, what remains is we have been surrounded & supported by some of the most hardworking & talented individuals in our business, who’ve been on this crazy roller coaster of cancellations, a formidable fan base and renewals. When will season 6 of Lucifer release on Netflix?

Thanks to production being complete, we know that the series is due to return within a year of season 5b but exactly when isn’t yet known.

One positive sign that the show could be coming towards the end of 2021 or the beginning of 2022 is the fact that a Dutch rating agency recently assigned a rating to the show.

IMDb also lists season 6 for 2021 but that can be less than reliable but worth noting.

Will Lucifer feature in Netflix’s The Sandman?

As you may have seen, Netflix is working on The Sandman which will feature Lucifer and many speculated that Tom Ellis will be reprising his role. In January 2021, however, it was confirmed that they would be going in a different direction and instead cast Gwendoline Christie in the role.

Before we leave you, Geeked Week didn’t deliver a season 6 teaser like some proposed but we did get two treats. The first treat was an hour-long table read of season 1 episode 1 and the second was bloopers for season 5.
