Upcoming Apple iPhone 13 to feature always-on display, says leak

The iPhone 13 is rumored to have an always-on display, here's what we know so far

An always-on display, which is a feature of the Apple Watch Series 6 and is popular on several Android phones, could be included in the anticipated iPhone 13 line-up. According to the most recent claim from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who highlighted Apple’s upcoming phone in his Power On newsletter, the iPhone 13 will have a 120Hz refresh rate and a reduced display notch and will be powered by the so-called A15 Bionic CPU. While Android phones, particularly Samsung phones, have had always-on displays for more than five years, Apple has been slow to embrace them for its iPhones.

Always-on displays are useful for quickly viewing information and notifications without having to unlock your phone. Always-on screens that are well-implemented can be really useful, with phones like the OnePlus 8T displaying a smart gauge of how often you’ve looked at your phone throughout the day.

Because always-on displays drain battery life, there’s a convincing case to be made for Apple’s decision to avoid them thus far. However, because to display technology like LTPO, which allows for adjustable refresh rates (the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra can scale down from 120Hz to 10Hz), always-on screens are becoming less power-intensive.

According to Gurman and other reports, the iPhone 12, or at the very least the iPhone 12 Pro models, could feature LTPO panels to support the predicted 120Hz refresh rate. As a result, an always-on display may be activated at the same time without jeopardizing the iPhone’s normally long battery life.

What will the iPhone 13’s always-on display do?

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard speculations of an iPhone 13 with an always-on display, as leakers have already outlined how such a screen might work. The always-on display, according to reports, will allow future iPhone 13 owners to rapidly assess alerts, battery life, and the time of day at a look by illuminating a portion of the iPhone 13’s OLED display with that information.

While it’s just a concept, a video on the A Better Computer YouTube channel depicts what an always-on display on iPhone 13 may look like. Aside from new display technology and features, the iPhone 13 is rumored to include camera upgrades, such as astrophotography and portrait mode video, as well as a new CPU, which will most likely be termed the A15 Bionic.
